The Renault R35, was a French light infantry tank of the Second World War.Designed from 1933 and produced from 1936, the type was intended as a light infantry support tank, equipping autonomous tank battalions, that would be allocated to individual infantry divisions to assist them in executing offensive operations. To this end it was relatively well-armoured but slow and lacking a good antitank-capacity, fitted with a short 37 mm gun. At the outbreak of the war, the antitank-rôle was more emphasized leading to the development and eventual production from April 1940 of a subtype with a more powerful longer gun, the Renault R40. It was planned to shift new production capacity to the manufacture of other, faster, types, but due to the defeat of France the R35/40 remained the most numerous French tank of the war, about 1685 vehicles having been produced in June 1940. At that moment it had also been exported to Poland, Romania, Turkey and Yugoslavia. For the remainder of the war Germany and its allies would use captured vehicles, some of them rebuilt into tank destroyers.

Il Renault R35 è un carro armato di fanteria leggera francese della seconda guerra mondiale, i cui primi prototipi furono presentati nel 1934 e la produzione in serie continuò nel 1935-1940. In totale, nel suo corso sono state create circa 1.600 copie di questo carro armato di tutte le versioni. Come trasmissione è stato utilizzato un unico motore a carburatore Renault 447 con 82 CV. Era armato con un cannone SA18 Le / 21 o SA38 Le / 33 da 37 mm e una mitragliatrice MAC31 da 7,5 mm.
La Renault R35 è stata sviluppata come successore del veicolo Renault FT-17, creato durante la prima guerra mondiale, e fin dall'inizio è stato concepito per la cooperazione con le unità di fanteria. Inizialmente si presumeva che il nuovo carro armato sarebbe stato armato solo con mitragliatrici, ma durante i test questa idea è stata ritirata. Infine, la Renault R35 disponeva di un buon armamento alla fine degli anni '30 (la versione con il cannone SA38), che gli permetteva di combattere praticamente qualsiasi carro armato tedesco o italiano. Aveva anche un'ottima armatura e buoni dispositivi di osservazione. Gli aspetti negativi erano le scarse prestazioni, in particolare il basso regime di punta, il motore che tendeva a surriscaldarsi e consumava molto carburante, e - probabilmente soprattutto - sovraccaricato dai compiti del comandante di carro armato, che non era in grado di comandare efficacemente esso sul campo di battaglia. Questo svantaggio, inoltre, era tipico di molti altri carri armati francesi di questo periodo. Nel 1940 il modello R40 fu adottato dall'esercito francese, con un telaio modificato. Dopo la caduta della Francia nel 1940, i carri armati Renault R35 furono utilizzati, tra gli altri, dalle truppe tedesche e italiane.
