The last Marder III variant was based on the Geschützwagen 38(t) Ausf. M, a purpose-designed vehicle for self-propelled gun use, again armed with the 75 mm PaK 40 anti-tank gun. Ausf. M was the final variant of the Marder series and was a significant improvement over previous models, with its lower silhouette, sloped armor and much more functional fighting compartment. In this variant, the engine was moved from the rear to the middle between driver and the rest of the crew. Because there was no engine in the rear, the gun and the crew did not have to sit on top of the engine deck as in previous models. The fighting compartment could be lowered down to the bottom floor level where the engine used to be, which decreased crew exposure, as well as visibility. Unlike the previous two Marder IIIs, the fighting compartment was closed at the rear, protecting the crew up to their midsection. It stayed open-topped. It could carry only 27 rounds of ammunition. The machinegun port at the front was eliminated in the Ausf. M in favor of an MG 34 or MG 42 carried by the crew.

Il Marder III (Sd.Kfz 138 e 139) è stato un cacciacarri tedesco della seconda guerra mondiale. I primi prototipi del veicolo furono realizzati nel 1942 e la produzione in serie continuò nel periodo 1942-1944, terminando con la produzione di circa 970 veicoli. Il Marder III era alimentato da un unico motore Praga EPA di varie versioni con una capacità di 125-150 CV. Era armato con 1 cannone F-22 Modello 1936 cal.76,2 mm (Sd. Kfz. 139) o 1 cannone PaK 40 cal.75 mm (Sd. Kfz. 138) e 1 mitragliatrice MG34 o MG42 calibro 7,92 mm.
Il Marder III è stato creato a seguito di una carenza di hardware nella Wehrmacht relativa a un cannone anticarro mobile, in grado di distruggere il T-34 e il KW-1 sovietici. Al fine di ridurre al minimo i tempi di test e implementazione in produzione, il Marder III è stato creato con il telaio del carro armato PzKpfw 38 (t), che è stato poi dismesso, e nella versione originale l'armamento principale era l'F-22 sovietico catturato pistola. Tre varianti di questo veicolo sono state prodotte in serie. Il primo era designato Sd.Kfz 139 Marder III ed era armato con il suddetto cannone F-22 sovietico catturato da 76,2 mm e alimentato da un motore da 125 CV. Sd.Kfz 138 Marder III Ausf è stato istituito subito dopo. H, che era equipaggiato con il cannone tedesco PaK 40 da 75 mm e un motore da 140 CV. Infine, l'ultima versione prodotta in serie è stata la Sd.Kfz 138 Marder III Ausf. M, che aveva ancora il cannone PaK 40, ma aveva già un compartimento equipaggio chiuso e un motore da 150 CV. I veicoli Marder III di tutte le versioni furono utilizzati principalmente sul fronte orientale nel periodo 1942-1945, dove soprattutto nel periodo 1942-1943 si rivelò un'arma molto efficace. Un piccolo lotto di circa 60-70 veicoli andò in Nord Africa a cavallo tra il 1942 e il 1943.
